week of November 1, 2010

This week's Independent newspaper featured articles on both the DAR Poster Contest and Design Ad contest and pictures of student's who won art awards !

Last Friday, several judges from the Lions Club visited our campus to select winners from Trinity to continue in the Vision of Peace Poster contest. Congratulations to Sydney Bassett who was awarded First place and will receive a $100 savings bond. Second place was awarded to Carolyn Albritton and Third place to Mary Conley Teel. They will receive $75 and $50 savings bonds.

To view images of all the student's work for this competition, see the 6th grade page on our class WIKI. I have uploaded a PDF file with images of all the posters.

Don't be surprised if your 6th grade students ask you to donate items to our art class that sound like we are trying to rival the food network show "Ace of Cakes". They may even start using words like gum paste and fondant. There are some special staff at Trinity that will receive our "artwork" for their dedication and hard work to our school!! I am sure we will have lots of pictures and maybe a video or two to share. This should get interesting !!!

7th grade is working hard to develop their rendering skills. We have been learning how to create 3 dimension in our work using value, light and shadow. They drew their hands this week using a view finder. We selected a top 10 from our gallery and will publish these next week on our WIKI. The work will also be on display in the Lobby of Willett Hall through December. We are using all these skills to design a still life painting of a fruit and / or vegetable. We will produce a copy of our painting for a class critique (and for the student's to keep). Our final canvas will be donated to Zoe's on Zelda and sold to our community in January. Proceeds will be given back to Trinity. Our class is raising money to plan a field trip to the High Museum of Art in Atlanta.

7th grade student work in local art show

Natalie Stanley was our guest artist last week ! She was able to spend time with our 7th grade students demonstrating her art style, showing us images of her work and talking about her inspiration as an artist. She is hosting an art show in her home tomorrow night (Tuesday, October 19, 6-8pm / 9719 Wynchase Circle 36117). Ten of our students work will be sent and sold as a fundraiser supporting Mission to the World. (You may want to contact Natalie 221.9267 if you want to buy your child's art work.) The top 10 were selected by Trinity upper school art students ! Congratulations to the following students: Christina Hogan, Wilson Shanahan, Carly Mattox, Katie Chandler, Mollie Beth Dill, Mary Stuart Goocher, Jake Hemmings, Virginia Reid, Meredith Moore, and Alyssa Clark. We studied both Natalie's style and the work of artist Susie Pryor to develop these very expressionistic images of Montgomery Church steeples. Images of the students work are shown on the 7th grade page of the Art Wiki (a link to this can be found on the main page of our class blog or the art page on Edline).

week of September 20-25

Both 6th and 7th grades have designed graphic advertisements for six Montgomery businesses. The Design Ad Competition is sponsored by the Montgomery Advertiser. Each of the businesses will select a class winner and overall winner for their company ad. There will also be 1st, 2nd and 3rd place overall winners for the 4th-6th grade division, 7th-9th grade division and 10th-12th grade divisions. I will announce winners as soon as the Montgomery Advertiser has completed the judging process !! The winners will be invited to an Awards Banquet at the Davis Theater. More info to come !!

I will send a post later this week with all the dates, times and locations for each of the Design Competitions in which we are participating.

6th grade
This week we will continue to design and complete our posters for the DAR Constitution Poster Contest. Ten posters will be selected from our 6th grade, and will be displayed in Goodwyn Hall at AUM. Overall winners will be selected from Montgomery County Public and Private schools. More info to come regarding awards, dates and times of Awards Ceremony.

Our next project will be related to the Art Style of Pop Art. We will look at some of the works by Andy Warhol and Jim Dine. We will do several drawings of common, everyday objects (Coca Cola bottles, a Campbell's soup can and tools). Each student will then create a silhouette drawing of themself and create two different pieces of art, as a repetition pattern and a positive / negative expression.

7th grade
Last week students completed their artwork for the Montgomery Humane Society "Howl-iday Card" Contest. The theme was "Home for the Holidays". Students were to show pets being adopted into loving environments. The Humane Society will select winners and this group of students will be invited to an Awards Ceremony at the annual Walk and Wag event at Alabama Shakespeare Festival.

This week we will spend a few days focusing on blind contour drawing and one point perspectives. We will be using our sketchbooks to practice these techniques before we begin the Room with a View project. Students will design a window using drafting tools, incorporate a table, chair and items on the table in perspective. A pattern must also be incorporated somewhere in the overall design. We will use paint and colored pencil to complete our artwork.
