week of September 20-25

Both 6th and 7th grades have designed graphic advertisements for six Montgomery businesses. The Design Ad Competition is sponsored by the Montgomery Advertiser. Each of the businesses will select a class winner and overall winner for their company ad. There will also be 1st, 2nd and 3rd place overall winners for the 4th-6th grade division, 7th-9th grade division and 10th-12th grade divisions. I will announce winners as soon as the Montgomery Advertiser has completed the judging process !! The winners will be invited to an Awards Banquet at the Davis Theater. More info to come !!

I will send a post later this week with all the dates, times and locations for each of the Design Competitions in which we are participating.

6th grade
This week we will continue to design and complete our posters for the DAR Constitution Poster Contest. Ten posters will be selected from our 6th grade, and will be displayed in Goodwyn Hall at AUM. Overall winners will be selected from Montgomery County Public and Private schools. More info to come regarding awards, dates and times of Awards Ceremony.

Our next project will be related to the Art Style of Pop Art. We will look at some of the works by Andy Warhol and Jim Dine. We will do several drawings of common, everyday objects (Coca Cola bottles, a Campbell's soup can and tools). Each student will then create a silhouette drawing of themself and create two different pieces of art, as a repetition pattern and a positive / negative expression.

7th grade
Last week students completed their artwork for the Montgomery Humane Society "Howl-iday Card" Contest. The theme was "Home for the Holidays". Students were to show pets being adopted into loving environments. The Humane Society will select winners and this group of students will be invited to an Awards Ceremony at the annual Walk and Wag event at Alabama Shakespeare Festival.

This week we will spend a few days focusing on blind contour drawing and one point perspectives. We will be using our sketchbooks to practice these techniques before we begin the Room with a View project. Students will design a window using drafting tools, incorporate a table, chair and items on the table in perspective. A pattern must also be incorporated somewhere in the overall design. We will use paint and colored pencil to complete our artwork.
