MEDIA ADVISORY: Roby Set to Return from Afghanistan

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – U.S. Representative Martha Roby is presently on her way back from Afghanistan today, where she spent time with U.S. military forces in and around Kabul and Kandahar.
Roby led a Congressional Delegation (CODEL) of five House members overseas to observe U.S. military operations, receive briefings about NATO activities, and evaluate the contributions, efforts, and concerns of local Afghani women.
Tonight, Roby and members of the CODEL are in Bahrain, home of the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet. There they will receive an update on Israel and Iran before they return stateside.
“Rep. Roby is a member of the House Armed Services Committee, which has oversight responsibilities over the U.S. military,” said Brecke Latham, Roby’s Communications Director. “She takes those responsibilities seriously, and was eager to return to Afghanistan to evaluate our progress there. She looks forward to returning to Alabama to share her observations with her constituents.”
Earlier today, Roby took part in a lunch with troops from Alabama deployed to Afghanistan, including one soldier from Enterprise. While in the country, Roby distributed more than 200 handmade cards to U.S. troops. The cards were authored and illustrated by schoolchildren throughout Alabama’s Second Congressional District.
Roby’s return marks her second trip to Afghanistan.

new beginning to 2012!

I am looking forward to seeing everyone back in the art room! I hope everyone has had a great Christmas holiday.
Following is an overview of our first few weeks!

6th grade: We will continue our unit on Pop Art. We have studied the work of artist Andy Warhol and Jim Dine. Students have drawn Coca Cola bottles, and created abstract paintings using common, everyday objects. Our first few days will include creating a silhouette collage with images and colors that express each student. Artist Wayne Thiebaud is up next! We will look at his work using food as subject matter and create clay food sculpture.
Our 6th grade students will be going to the Montgomery Museum of Fine Art on Tuesday, February 7. More details to follow!

7th grade: We completed our unit on Looking at Art in December. Students created some amazing fish designs inspired by artists that they saw at the High Museum of Art / Atlanta in November. Students are learning to use a project planning sheet to consider how they would like to design and develop their ideas. It is a great way to incorporate writing into our art program. Students consider how they will use the Principles and Elements of Art in their design in the early stages and then continue to develop their ideas. We completed this project with a written assessment on edmodo, as well. Students were able to write about their work and answer questions describing their projects. Our next unit will include Folk Art. We will submit our work to the Montgomery Museum of Fine Art Corridor Program. Work will be inspired by images of Montgomery architecture.
